VOLUME 3 NUMBER 2 JUNE 2004

3rd National Chenoweth Reunion Nears

Interest in the Oregon Reunion has picked up, nearing the 100 mark and we all hope that registrations will continue. Bill Chinworth, co-organizer, has stated that the event will go on regardless. Attendance is coming from all over: Alabama, Arizona, Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Maryland, Ohio, Oregon, Texas, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, even Mexico and with representatives from each of the 5 sons of the original family.
[DIRECTORS] Among others these include JOHN (2): 15 - 3 families from John of Randolph Co., WV, a line from his brother Jonathan and his brother William, 5 families from William S. of Warren Co., OH, 2 from his brother Elias, 1 family from the Morgan Co., IN families of Ephraim B., 2 families from Arthur of KY. RICHARD (2) 5 - 2 from the Tennessee lines of John and 3 from his brother Thomas from Maryland. ARTHUR (2) 8 - 1 from the William families of Randolph Co., IN, 4 from the Ohio lines of Arthur, III, 3 from Samuel. WILLIAM (2): 5 - 2 from Thomas of Clarke Co., OH, 2 from the cousin marriages of Warren Co., OH and one from Isaac. THOMAS (2) 9 - 2 from Thomas, Jr, 1 from Richard, 1 from Elijah and 5 from Abraham.

A delight to me, I was informed that Elmer Rathbun Haile, Jr has registered. His niece lives in Corvallis, OR. Elmer is 94 years old and has been my best source for early Baltimore and the records of John Chenoweth, the progenitor. At 94, nothing is ever certain, but if this happens it will be the making of the reunion for me, I have wanted to thank Elmer in person for all his help.

I have talked to so many cousins over the years who have delighted in the two previous reunions. Anyone living close enough to Portland should at least consider showing up for the Picnic. Greg Wulker is flying in from Ohio. This will be Greg's 3rd reunion. Having walked the trail to the spring house near Louisville, KY where Richard Chenoweth lived, Greg will pobably want to see "Chenoweth" on the Columbia, named after Justin. Daniel Chenoweth from Sonora and his uncles, Gilbereto and Raymundo are coming from Mexico. There are many cousins who I have only known by Email and will finally meet in person.

Looking forward to an enthusiastic reunion - Jon Egge ...registration forms at Bill's site.

UPDATE: I notice that you done quite a bit with the SSA index. Would you consider receiving contributions towards getting copies of "unknown" applications? Being female, I can't contribute to the gene project, but would like to contribute in some other way. Everyone is doing a wonderful job with the Chenoweth family tree!!.

Many thanks for your gracious donation to this project. With it we were able to obtain 2 more Social Security Applications on lines that we have not been able to place. As is the case in many situations, we were not able to place these lines but did gain valuable information that may help us in the future. - editor.

Dear Pete, My mother will be 83 on this Saturday (3/27) and is from the Chenoweth family. My cousin in the South found this website and we have been anxious for an update to the date of the August reunion. I live just north of Portland and so mother has been quite excited to think she could get her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren all here to participate. Have you any news yet?? Yours was the only email I saw so I appreciate any help you can give us. God willing, mom is ok now and will be able to hold on with the anticipation of the event.

Hi, Peter - what a wonderful publication you have created! Just followed Jon's link in a recent message. Thank you for such comprehensive work. One tiny correction (from an old Latin teacher): the expression is "in memoriam" - and I thought I'd just point that out. It is so good to have people who work so hard for the much larger family - you don't know where your information will end. On behalf of all of us - even the most distant - thanks again for the good work!

Thank you for the correction. We attempt to make it as accurate as possible, but sometimes things slip by us. It is our pleasure to publish a newsletter that is informative and appreciated. Over the years I have subscribed to many "Chenoweth Family Newsletters" only to find that they were of a very generic nature, with little or no information pertaining to the Chenoweth Family. It can not be emphasized too much that this is your newsletter and input is always be greatly appreciated. - editor

Pete: Just to show you (as sent to me) that other families are making progress using DNA. I think we would too if we had a bit more co-operation

The following was taken from an internet message board with regards to the McGee Family

There has been a likely DNA match between two McGee lines that previously had no known relationship!

The initial 12 (out of 25) marker results for a participant in the McGee Surname DNA Project resulted in a close match (11/12) with a descendant of Eli McGehee in the Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation database. The line of this particular McGee Project participant has a history of using the McGhee, McGee, and McGehee surnames.

The full results of the 25 marker test are expected to be available in the near future. It will be interesting to see if the 1 marker genetic distance holds up with the additional markers. This test result may lead the genealogical research along a specific path that might never have been found without the DNA testing. The specific information regarding the possible connection with the Lincoln Co., TN McGehee line may lead to extending this McGhee line.

This test has also indicated that there is no relationship with the McGee line of Warren Co., TN; there is a genetic distance of seven between the two lines. For a 12 marker test, this indicates that the Most Recent Common Ancestor (MRCA) is likely several thousand years ago.

These are the kind of results that we are hoping to produce with our own DNA Project. The ability to place previously unidentified lines within the Chenoweth Family structure is a definite possibility. As stated previously the MRCA between Bill Chinworth and myself indicates a common relative during the early 1500s. Please support this project.- editor

Yes, Jon, I like the inclusion of Mary's Berry family. I shared this much with one Berry who has put it on Roots/World. Perhaps some cousins will find it there.

PART 2
[
continuation of Part 1, Mar 2004]

Grandfather John again opened a shop in New York where he made furniture, repaired old pieces, and bought and sold second hand furniture. He was a good cabinetmaker and took pride in his work. He was a man of mild disposition, kind in his manner and always willing to do a neighbor or a stranger a good turn. He was fond of reading and studious by nature. He cared nothing for the accumulations of property. The opportunities for gain in New York City at that time were many, but he was satisfied with enough for his family to live on. He was fond of his children, interested in their welfare, but left the discipline entirely to their mother. Grandmother Caroline was an energetic and resourceful woman who cared for her large family with only the help of the older children. Being members of the Church of England, the family affiliated with Trinity Church in New York and the children were brought up in this faith.

In the 1860 census the family is found in New York. In the late 1860's John E. moved his family to Kansas, while the rest of the family relocated to New Jersey. The census' from 1870 to 1930 find the family still living in Kansas and New Jersey. At present the family is still predominately located in Kansas and New Jersey, but also is found in Oregon, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, New Hampshire and California.

The College of Arms has sent and I've received the Chenoweth quartered coat of arms that's official to the system. One of the things I'll do is get it framed and then we'll see where we are crest wise. I see no reason why the Red, Black and Gold one we use here can't be acclaimed as good enough.

Jean Tuohino has advised us that she has a CD copy of her Uncle Wilbur Rossiter Chenoweth's piano compositions. Wilbur Rossiter was born June 5, 1899 in Johnson Co., NE. Educated at the Lincoln Musical College, he received his Bachelor of Music degree at the University of Nebraska in 1918. In his career he was a professor of organ, piano, and composition at the University of Nebraska, professor of piano at Occidental College in Los Angeles and taught in his own private studios. He was a prolific composer with published and performed works numbering in the scores, and covering a wide range of styles. Typical are "Concert Waltz", "The Hidden Waterfall", "Waltz-Caprice", "Puppets on Parade", "A Frog He Would A-Wooing Go", "March Triumphant" and "Carillon Christmas Carols". World War II Database Available on Internet

Recently it was brought to the attention of this editor that a database of World War II veterans was being created online. A search of the website www.wwiimemorial.com confirmed this information. The website has information about the World War II Memorial and honors veterans of that war. As of this date the editor has submitted the names of over 100 Chenoweth's to be honored at this site. With sites like this available it is all the more important for us to maintain our own military database. An updated version of our combat pages will be online in the near future. Please, take the opportunity to view this section of the Chenoweth family website and submit any additions, additional information or corrections to the editor.

The Richards of the 3rd generation, and theKnoxville connection

The names of the 5 sons of John Chenoweth and Mary: John, Richard, Arthur, William, and Thomas are all strongly reflected in the family tree. In the 3rd generation there were 29 grandsons from the 5 original sons. Only the name William is found in each family. The other four names are found in four of the five families. The exception is the family of William himself. Though he had four sons, he chose the biblical names of Joseph, Absolom and Isaac for his other sons, besides William, Jr. Of the 5 other grandsons, John had a son Absolom, Arthur had a son Samuel, after his father-in-law, Richard had a son Joseph, and Thomas had sons Elijah and Abraham. In this last instance, Abraham was probably named for the brother-in-law of Thomas, Abraham Prickett, who lived next door to the family on Back Creek, Frederick Co., VA.

So there were 4 Richard's in the 3rd generation: one in each family but William's. Remarkably all are said to have served in the American Revolution and 3 founded fine family lines. The most famous of these Richards was the son of John, who went to Kentucky, still then a wilderness, and became one of the 7 founders of the City of Louisville. An even more noted event was the attack on his family known as the Chenoweth Massacre. Much has been written about this Richard and there are two separate articles posted at the family website about his life. see: [Chenoweth - Massacre] [Captain Richard Chenoweth]

Richard, Jr is on the other extreme. Almost nothing is known about him. Though he is said to have served in the Revolution, this service is not presently documented or recognized. Did he marry? Is he responsible for the lost Chenoweth families of Baltimore? All we know is that he lived on his father's property in the Back Creek Hundreds until it was sold in a sheriff's sale. We know that he took over the task of being the executor of his father's will, although we do not know the outcome of his stewardship. The rest is presently lost to us.

A third Richard was the son of Thomas. He served twice in the Revolution from Allegany Co., MD and married there to Martha Smith. He moved with his siblings to Mason Co., KY and settled with them in Pike Co., OH. Late in life he and Martha relocated a third time to Tippecanoe Co., IN, one of three 3rd generation Chenoweths to reach this frontier state.

Perhaps though, the most intriguing Richard of the 3rd generation was Richard the son of Arthur. Peter Chenoweth suggested this subject after a previous newsletter. So after this lengthy way of introduction, let's examine this Richard in earnest. Cora Hiatt gave us only his name and a year of birth, said he was the executor of his father's will and that he served in the American Revolution. The will itself mentions a daughter Elizabeth and bequeaths to Richard the remainder of Arthur's lands. Outside of this daughter, no mention was made of Richard's family or what had become of him. Cora gave a year of 1744 for his birth.

Richard had two families, one in Baltimore Co., MD and another that followed in Knox Co., TN. In their research Richard and Shirley Harris picked up the Tennessee line and then found his will in Knox Co., mentioning both families but they were perplexed at who he was. In part because of Cora's assertion that Arthur's son Richard was born in 1744, they misplaced him as a son of John(3), the son of Richard(2). John did have a son Richard who was mentioned in the will of Richard(2), but we know nothing of what happened to him today. [This 4th generation Richard is another candidate for some of Baltimore's unknown lines.]

As I have found out, there were descendants that were not confused. The first instance of this I found was World Family Tree submittal by William Walker "Bill" Close. I contacted him by phone. Bill had used as his source a study done by Bartley Russell McBath, a son of the Knox Co., TN daughter, Eliza Jane Chenoweth of Richard Chenoweth and Ellen Hammer. Bill was a great grandson of Andrew Montgomery McBath, who was a brother to Bartley Russell McBath. Bartley did a family study using the will, Bible material and family contacts, some reuniting him with the Baltimore side of this. Next Jane Ryan, researching in Baltimore, came upon some "illuminating documents", [discussed below]. Jane's work was followed by more documents from Dorinda Shepley who had worked with me over several years on the line of Richard's brother Thomas who lived in Frederick Co., MD. Finally I came upon Baltimore research by Gladys Chenoweth Wimert. These were certain proofs and opened a story missed by both Cora and Shirley Harris.

When Shirley Harris found Richard's will in Knox Co., TN, they did not have any of the 4 sources I cited above. Moreover they accepted Cora's year of birth of 1744 for Arthur's son, Richard. Richard's will, written in January 25, 1821 mentioned a son born in 1819. This would make Richard 75 years old using Cora's birth year for Richard of 1744. This would have been questionable in any one's mind. Richard, the son of John(3) and grandson of Richard(2), was a more logical choice first by age and second by the Tennessee location. John's widow, Frances, and her children, Archibald, Elizabeth, Frances, and Parmenus had all gone to Washington Co., TN. The actual birth date of Richard by his Bible was June 1, 1755. This helps, but in reality, Richard's last child was born in 1827 when he was 72! What a stud!!

This is the family:

To fully understand Richard you have to read his will in full knowledge of the circumstances. The perplexing part of all this was that the record of Richard's marriage to his second wife, Ellen Hammer, was January 14, 1823 in Knox Co., TN. Now examine this court record of Richard's first wife, Eleanor Askew, in Baltimore, MD, as found by Dorinda Shepley in her research there.

Frederick Co., MD Chancery - 4 Aug 1815
Eleanor CHENOWITH of Baltimore County vs Richard CHENOWITH for Alimony

Eleanor CHENOWITH, age 32 (JE: NOTE should be 52), was married to Richard CHENOWITH and they had seven children, some of which are now married. She claimed a loving and good marriage up until the past two years. Before her marriage she owned $2500 of real and personal property and her husband has since sold said property for his own benefit.

Three years ago, she took into her home a young woman she hired from the neighborhood and shortly thereafter her husband's affection became estranged from her and soon afterwards he moved out of her bed. About two years ago at Christmas time, he left her and moved with this woman to Tennessee, having first sold nearly all of his personal property including stock and slaves. This created great hardship on Eleanor and if not for the assistance of her children, she would not have been able to manage. She had hoped he would see the error of his ways and return home but he didn't and then she saw an advertisement signed by him offering the sale of their real estate which would deprive her of her home and leave her penniless.

Richard is in possession of lands, Arthur's lot, Arthur's addition, Arthur's Addition Resurveyed, pt Mount Ebbs, pt William Resurveyed, all in Baltimore County and totaling 400 acres being worth $20,000. Richard has recently returned to this state to settle his property which she is anxious to prevent until he has made provisions for her support through her old age. Witnessed by Richard BARRY, merchant (his wife is related to Eleanor) dated 4 Aug 1815.

Advertisement in FederalGazette, Baltimore dtd 4 Apr 1815

For Sale - Farm & Mills, 18 miles north of Baltimore near Reisterstown 360 acres arable and wood land, 40 acres meadow. Lands run with and bind on Hanover Turnpike and extend near Westminster Turnpike. The soil is excellent for clover and plaster. The mill was rebuilt for merchants work four years ago except for the elevators and Hopper Bay. There are two houses, one frame, one hewn log 2-story, log kitchen, large frame barn, log stable, three apple orchards, well with pump at door and 40 acres woodland. There are several good springs. Apply to Thomas REISTER, Reisterstown or William CHENOWETH on premises.

It was decided by the courts that Richard would put up $3,333 dollars in the bank and Elizabeth would get $200 a year for support; Samuel DONALDSON would be trustee. Richard instead decided to make a deal with Elizabeth and William, the eldest son.

On Mar 1821, Richard executed a deed to Eleanor for part of the farm where they lived of 89 acres in lieu of the $200 annual payment. (He probably obtained a divorce at this time but a divorce is not mentioned in this record, only her settlement.) At this time, William CHENOWETH, eldest son, Baltimore County was age 26. Richard has Articles of Agreement written up on this same date with strict provisions of William's role and duties regarding the property (how many acres to plant and what to plant and maintaining fences, etc) and stipulation William agrees to care for his mother and will live on the property. At this time, Richard was listed as being of Knox Co., TN and Eleanor and William were of Baltimore County. The land was adjacent to the mill, 80 acres cleared and fenced with a 2-story log house, orchards, other buildings and a little meadow of 9 acres; adjoined the lands of Jacob EICHELBERGER. By now, they had been married for 30+ years. (NOTE: There was an additional stipulation regarding William living on the property for three years after his mother's death but had if she lives more than three years; but Richard would regain the property if Elizabeth dies within two years, Richard made no mention of William inheriting the property either way.) Signed by William, and Elizabeth signed by mark. [Mdhr 17, 898-870, Baltimore Co., MD, 1815 - State Archives]

So Richard, in his mid fifties, absconded with the Irish maid, Ellen Hammer, to Tennessee. This desertion would have profound repercussions on the Baltimore family of Richard, depriving them of the wealth of Arthur's lands, which Richard inherited. Richard's love for Ellen Hammer is quite evident. In the 16 years they lived together in Tennessee, he fathered 7 children, the last when he was about 71 years old. More telling, he waited some 11 years until he was free to finally marry the woman who had so caught his affections to throw away his life in Baltimore.

Whether this was because Eleanor had finally died or divorced him is unknown. A careful reading of Richard's will is quite telling. Remember this was written almost 2 years before he married Ellen. You can see him struggle with the wording in the will to cover the fact of his two families. Why else would you refer to each as "wife or companion":

In the name of God amen I Richard Chenowith of the County of Knox in the Sate of Tennessee knowing the uncertainty of this mortal life and being in perfect health and of sound mind memory and understanding praised be God for his mercies do make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner and form following Vix in primis. Two other contributions help to form a more complete picture:

  • Jane Ryan, in looking for the proofs of Richard, has confirmed that he is indeed the son of Arthur by the following land transaction:

Richard sold 355 acres of his land to Robert Benson per deed dated 19 January 1818 for $9,500 - this included parts of Arthur's Lot, Arthur's Addition, Gilead, William resurveyed, Pork Hall. On that same date, Robert Benson gave a mortgage to Richard Chenoweth with 3 promissory notes referred to. One note for $3,333 was to pay interest of 6% per annum to be paid quarterly to Eleanor Askew in lieu of her right of dower. This money was for her support and maintenance. If she died it reverted back to Richard.

This transaction tied Arthur's original land to the Richard who married Eleanor Askew. It adds another dimension that Eleanor was not dead when Richard started his family with Ellen.

  • A recent contribution from James Eippert of Rocky River, OH, a descendant of Richard's Tennessee daughter, Henrietta, sheds even more light on this situation. In a letter written by Richard's Baltimore grandson, Arthur b: November 18, 1833, Arthur wrote in part: "I am 63 years old. I am the son of Wm Chenoweth, who was the son of Richard Chenoweth all of Balto County. My Grandfather was married to Ellen Asque of Delaware September 14th, 1776. My Father was born March 9th, 1791, died Apr 13th, 1853. My Grandfather owned considerable property in this County. He left here sometime about 1812 or before. He made several trips to Tennessee and returned and after Grand Mother died he returned and got his housekeeper and they left here on horse back for Tennessee were (where) they were married."

This becomes one of the more interesting stories of the early family. Also see: background discussion

THOUGHTS WHICH HAVE KEPT ME AWAKE AT NIGHT
(Author Unknown)

No book is entirely perfect, for errors will creep in; Sometimes wrong information is sent by someone's nearest kin.
And even printers make mistakes, for which they tear their hair; Sometimes two people disagree on who or what or where.
It might have been the person who wrote the history; It might have been the typist, or blame the author, me.
So if you're dead before you're born, or married when you're three; Or I've omitted anyone who sent themselves to me.
Or your last name is not your own, your picture not too good, I ask you please forgive me, I did the best I could!

DO YOU KNOW THESE PEOPLE?

In the past several issues we have listed individual Birth and Social Security Records. Many of these individuals were identified through your efforts. We thank you for that and would like to try another avenue of approach to our unknowns. Marriage information. Starting with this issue we offer 160 marriage records of Chenoweths. This information was obtained through internet sources. Any help in identifying these individuals would be greatly appreciated.
