THE THURMANS: JOSEPH ABSOLOM THURMAN(6) 1831-1907

Joseph Absolom Thurman was the 5th child of Mary Chenoweth and Elijah Thurman. He was born in Clinton County, Indiana, where his parents had relocated after their marriage in Kentucky. He married, at the age of 24, Evaline Frances McCarty, near Kiklin, Clinton Co., IN. She was still 18, the daughter of Nathaniel B. and Mary McCarty. They would have 11 children, all born in Clinton Co. Eight of these children would live to marry. In 1878 Joseph is listed as living in Hillisburg, about 7 miles east of Frankfort. He was a farmer. He also practiced herbal medicine and sold tonics and liniment for both human and livestock ailments. At some point he attended an herbal medicine school in Cincinnati. In 1883, Joseph took his family by covered wagon to Jack Co., TX, where he acquired 640 acres of land for $340. The poor crops he was able to produce there soon discouraged him. So, in 1897, he sold his land and returned to Indiana. In 1903 he owned 32 acres, about a mile northwest of Kirlin. This he willed to his wife, Evaline, on his death in 1907, at the age of 76. Evaline died 4 years later in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Co., OK on a visit to the home of her son, Elijah. Joseph and Evaline are both buried in Greenlawn cemetery, Frankfort, IN.
