THE ASHBROOKS: ELI(4) 1781-1877
Eli Ashbrook was one of twelve children born to Mary Chenoweth and the Rev. Levi Ashbrook. He was born on September 23, 1781 in Hampshire Co., VA where Levi and Mary settled after their marriage, and there he grew into a young man. He married there on January 05, 1802 to Catherine Cata Peters, the daughter of Tunis Peters and Francinah Addams. This was one of 4 marriages between the children of Mary and Levi and those of Tunis and Francinah, all occurring in Hampshire County. All four, along with Tunis and Francinah and other Peters family members, went to Fairfield Co., OH. Eli like his father became a Baptist minister. Eli and Catherine had 12 children. The first 4 were born in Hamphire Co., before the move to Ohio. The next 4 were born in Fairfield Co., OH. Around 1820, Eli relocated his family to Johnstown in Licking Co., OH, where the last 4 were born. Eli died at age 95 on January 24, 1877 in Johnstown. He wife, Catherine, had passed away 6 years earlier. They are both buried in the Green Hill cemetery, Johnstown, OH.

The Ashbrook Homestead - Ohio
Rev. Eli Ashbrook. This gentleman is the oldest citizen of Licking County. He was born in Hampshire County, Virginia, September 23, 1781, united with the Baptist denomination in April, 1806, began to preach in 1812, and continued in the ministry for sixty-three years, a period longer than has ever served any other man in the state, if not in the country. He preached his last sermon in January, 1875, in the vicinity of Johnstown, this county. He was then aged ninety-three years and four months.
His wife was Caty Peters, of Loudon County, Virginia, whom he married January 5, 1802. His family numbered seven sons and seven daughters; two died in infancy, the others became heads of families.
Mr. Ashbrook came to Ohio in October, 1810, resided in Fairfield County some twelve years, and in 1823 moved to Johnstown. A large part of his life has been spent as a traveling preacher, and as such he has visited nine different states. He has been a very energetic, active man, and has faithfully consecrated the energies of his long life to labors for the welfare of his fellow-men and the glory of his Master. His wife died January 1, 1871. She was a devoted Christian woman, a fit companion for so worthy a man. Mr. Ashbrook lingers in his ninety-fourth year, "Only waiting by the river," for summons of "the boatman pale," to cross the stream and join the loved ones on the other side.
Introduction: William A. Ashbrook served as a Representative in the U. S. Congress from 1906 to 1920 and then again from 1934 until his death on January 1, 1940. When Will was 17 years old he started keeping a personal daily diary. He continued this practice until the day before he passed away. Later in life after he had served in Congress for a time, Will decided to publish his diaries to share with family and friends. The journals are a rich source of both family and national history -- told as only an eye witness can tell it. A mere 130 copies of this five volume set were ever published. Will was born in Johnstown Ohio on July 1, 1967. His grandparents Eli and Catherine were still alive and dwelt in an old log cabin that Eli built in 1821- a stones throw from where Will lived with his siblings and parents, William and Lucy (Pratt) Ashbrook. As you will see from this tribute that Will included in his journals, Grandfather Eli Ashbrook was a very special person. Enjoy!
My great grandfather, my grandfather and all of their people were devout Old School Baptists or Primitive Baptists, sometimes rather appropriately call Hard Shell Baptists, for they sure were hard set in their convictions. My grandfather began preaching in 1811 or when thirty years old and for over sixty years was a traveling evangelist or itinerant preacher. I have his Bible which he purchased in 1810. In his ministry which for length of years and for good accomplished is seldom equaled. An old history of Licking County published in 1875 says there is no such record in Ohio. He rode horseback for fifty years and when rheumatism uninvited came, undaunted, he mounted an old high two-wheeled sulky or cart and traveled, traveled over Ohio, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Pennsylvania and Maryland. He received no salary, he expected none, only a place to sleep and a bite to eat. He went from home to home community to community, exhorting the unconverted to accept Christ as their Savior and expounding the doctrines of his church and faith; comforting the sick and distressed and ministering to their welfare. Who is there who would care today to follow the example of my meek and lowly old grand sire and disciple of the Nazarene? That he made an impress on the people who saw and heard is certain, for fifty years after his voice was stilled there remained those who had not forgotten him in other states. More than once while living in Washington I met some one who inquired about him. Congressman Brown of West Virginia said his mother then past eight asked him to be sure and inquire of me if I was related to an old Baptist preacher from Ohio by my name who used to visit her home when she was a little girl. I quote from a letter dated June 30, 1911 from Governor John J. Cornwell of West Virginia whom I count my good friend; "I spoke to my mother who is eighty years old and was raised a few miles down the river below Romney about meeting you and she asked me to inquire whether your grandfather was an Old School Baptist preacher from Ohio. She has a very distinct recollection of an old gentleman by your name who used to visit her grandfather Monroe. She remembers his appearance but not his first name. Would like to have you meet her as some of her people married into the Ashbrook family, am sure she could recount many things that would interest you."
On those itinerant trips of my grandfather which were continuous for over sixty years, he would be absent from home for months. No communication of any kind could well be had with his faithful wife who was at home caring for a large family. Their faith was in the mercy of the God they loved and served and they worried not. When he would come home for a short time he wove Woolsey to clothe his children for he was an expert weaver, while his wife replenished his scant wardrobe and then he set out again. His bent was not to make and save money but to save souls. Such a life of Christian service is too wonderful to believe in this day and age.
In 1828 grandfather decided Johnstown must have a church home. Until that time religious services were held in the homes of the elect. On and from the soil of his first fifty acres he made the brick. The site is still well marked with brick dust hue. On the prominence near the Hartford road just north of Johnstown, the first church in northern Licking was erected of brick made and laid with his own hands and by the help of his sons who like the father were devout Baptists. When the membership of this church had dwindled to five of my old aunties, the church lot was deeded to one who later for a paltry sum sold it to John Mark Wright who tore the old church down and from the brick erected one mile away a very comfortable home which out to endure for another century. It still grieves me sore to think of what seems desecration to destroy that old church and that I do not now possess it just as it was upon the sacred ground. As a boy I remember the old church when it was surrounded by a grove of large forest trees with a winding drive leading up the hillside from the Hartford road.
In this old church when at home he preached for fifty years. One son, Tunis, followed the example of his father and became a preacher and with Elder Tussing, and Elder Hanover and others filled the pulpit while grandfather was away. Most folks today think twenty minutes ample for a sermon and a half hour tedious. They should hark back to the days when my grandfather mounted the high pulpit, adjusted his glasses, cleared his throat and blowed his nose on a red bandanna, read two lines of a mournful song, removed the tuning fork from his vest pocket, got the tune and sang it through two lines at a time. Then he would offer a short prayer of a half hour, recite the scripture, sing another two line song and start in. When he reached the thirdly and began to warm up his coat would be removed, a little later off would come collar and tie and then his bony fist would pound the little old round pulpit top as he sent home with startling fervor the awfulness of the hell fire and brimstone that awaited the ungodly. A recess would be taken of an hour for dinner served in the church or church yard and then two hours or more of the only brand of true religion. I say this not to be funny or sacrilegious but as a true recital of those old school Baptist days. It has been said that I some times nod in church. If so perhaps the spell of my childhood days still lingers.
My grandmother, a sweet old saint aged 86 years, 7 months and 25 days fell asleep in the room where I was born, January 1, 1871. On New Years day she began that new life where all tears are dried and love and joy reign supreme. Had she lived four more days my grandparents would have enjoyed 69 years of sweet companionship together.
I heard my grandfather preach his last sermon in the church he built and dedicated; it was in January 1875. He was then 93 years and 4 months old. He lived his last days with Aunt Julia Gates and died in her home. I remember well that I called upon him with my father the day before he died. He was lying in bed, suffering no pain, just worn out, patiently waiting, happy that the end was near. He sang, (he had a good voice) and recited several chapters of the Psalms, his favorite book. He could recite scores of chapters of the Bible. He never read the Bible in the pulpit but recited it. He had a strong, firm, fine face as his picture elsewhere found will reveal. He died January 24, 1877, aged 95 years, 4 months and 1 day. Shortly after his spirit took its flight the bell of the Baptist church down town (his old church never had a bell) where my parents worshiped for fifty years and where today with my little brood I try to carry on each Sabbath under discouraging conditions, tolled his departure. I recall as yesterday how we all gathered in the parlor of my old home and listened in awe and veneration, counting the years as the bell tolled his age and that some one then remarked that bell would never toll so many years again, and it never did. My father was in his 94th years when he left us but the custom of tolling the bell had then passed into disuse. The funeral was held two days later in the old brick church conducted by Rev. Tussing who performed like service for one uncle and five aunts. At his funeral were nine of his children, the eldest aged 74 and the youngest, my father, aged 53. His tired old body was laid by the side of his wife on the highest prominence in Green Hill cemetery. His eldest son, Jonathan, sleeps to his right, his daughter, Julia, to his left, four other daughters and one son are near as are more than three score of his descendants. A Scotch marble shaft imported from the land near which his ancestors embarked, points to his eternal home and at its
Opening comments by Will: I had known for nearly fifty years there was in existence some manuscript written by my grandfather relating to the Ashbrook family, but it was not until Easter time, 1934, that I was privileged to examine it and type this copy. It was through the kindness and courtesy of Laurabelle Ashbrook, a teacher in the Johnstown schools who is a daughter of H. D. Ashbrook of Granville, Ol, who is a son of the late H. M. (Munson) Ashbrook, who was a son of the late Hiram Ashbrook, who was a son of my grandfather, Rev. Eli Ashbrook.
This manuscript was written in 1871 when my grandfather was in his 90ths year. It remained in the possession of Uncle Hiram Ashbrook until his death, then in the possession of his son, O. D. Ashbrook, who lived at Marshalltown, Iowa, for nearly fifty years. At his death, a couple of years ago, it came back to Ohio to his nephew, H. D. Ashbrook. It gave me a thrill to read this manuscript, twelve pages of foolscap paper, and now to make sure that it will be preserved for future generations, prompts me to here include it in "my line a day." It reads to-wit:
I here write something about the Ashbrook descendants rising one hundred and fifty years ago. There was a man by the name of Aaron Ashbrook settled in Berkley County, Virginia. He had a family of five sons and one daughter.
After father's death I took much liberty, as boys of my age usually do after being left without a father. I became very wicked and took an active part in dancing and frolicking in other immoral practices to the great grief of my mother. I so continued until I turned into my seventeenth year.
About that time a Baptist preacher providently came along looking after the destitute churches my father had left. I, with my mother, went to one of his appointments, the preacher taking for his text: "There is a river, the stream thereof shall make glad the City of God." I was convicted there of sin, and saw I was a rebel against God and exposed to eternal ruin. I there saw a beautiful inclosure with persons dressed in white robes and a person standing facing the entrance. In my imagination someone spoke to my understanding: "This is not your place - there is your place." And then the awful pit was opened to my view. The sensation was so great that I exclaimed aloud, "Good Lord, is this my condition?" I sat down and tried to hide my face by bowing my head on the table. When I arose all were gone except the preacher and the lady of the house. When I got to the door my eyes fell upon the preacher. I then went home with mother. The next day there was to be a meeting in our house. When the preacher and people came I hid myself in the room as well as I could. The preacher took for his text: "I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear; but now mine eyes seeth thee." Job said he was his Redeemer, but I feel as if I was without a Redeemer. I felt as if all eyes were upon me. The preacher, the people and even the devil saw me and above all the Lord saw me. Language here fails to describe my feelings. I went to Methodist meetings afterwards. The sermons I heard there terrified me to the overflowing of tears.
I married a daughter of Deacon Peters, January 5, 1802. In April following, I settled down with mother on the old farm where I was born. In October I was taken with a spell of sickness and during that sickness my heart was heavy and I thought I must send for a young brother preacher, but that would not do for the people would know. I was in distress so I called my mother to come and pray for me. Her answer was, "My son I have prayed for you often, now pray for yourself."
Time passed along, my distress subsided, but I was again aroused by a vision. I thought the great day of the Lord had come. There appeared to be an enclosure and the Judge stood near the gate and there was much people moving on, but few entered therein. I saw my turn come next to move, and seeing so few had entered I refused. Then there appeared to be sparkling rods similar to blacksmith's hot iron which pierced me on one side and then on the other, and something seemed to say "Won't you be tried?" which forced me to submit. I moved on, and to my surprise entered in at the straight gate without difficulty. I then had hopes it might be so at the final day of accounts. I again went to Methodist meeting and they said if sinners would read the Bible, go to meeting and pray, salvation was certain, but I found that did not suit me. I quit going to meeting and fell into a cold lifeless state.
I then moved down North river, seven miles distant. I there had the privilege of hearing a Baptist preacher who had just moved into the county to preach to the churches my father left when he died. When I was at one of those meetings I had a sensation which I never experienced before. Looking around over my neighbors I scarcely knew any of them and I was thereby encouraged. I hitherto had thought I could address the good Lord as well standing as kneeling, but my stubborn heart gave way and I was brought to my knees. I went on pleading for mercy for some time. I then knelt by an old stump as I thought for the last time, when, behold I heard a voice saying, "Son be of good cheer, thy sins are forgiven." Then my load of trouble was gone and I enjoyed sweet peace of mind such as I never did before. I at that time thought I would enjoy that sweet peace of mind evermore.
I went to see a Baptist preacher, a brother of my wife, to tell him what I had found, and he requested me to tell the church my feelings. I did so and the next day was baptized, it being the fourth Sunday in April, 1806. My name was recorded in the church book of my father's care along with six of his children. My father preached to that church near one hundred hears ago. We were so happy so many of us in union in the church, it gave me great joy indeed. My companion here united with us while father and mother and five of their children could meet together and hear the word of God preached. It was comforting and consoling in the greatest degree.
Sometime after, my wife became somewhat deranged occasioned by the loss of her babe. She was for some time in fear she was deceived, but by moving about from place to place, sometimes at her father's, then at the preacher's house. Then a brother preacher came along and preached for us. I took him home with me and she was considerably cheered and began to recover.
Now we, with three of my wife's brothers and their wives, who were my sisters, were preparing to emigrate to Ohio. On the 11th of October, 1810, our preacher preached his farewell sermon to us children, as he called us, for he had married us and baptized us. He and Father Peters went with us three miles and the preacher said he had parted with his own children before but this was beyond any parting he had ever experienced.
We bad adieu and started for Ohio and landed in Pickaway county on the 27th of October, 1810. This location being very sickly, we did not stay long. We took up another location in Fairfield county and moved there the next April. We there located near a Baptist church of 96 members. We handed in our letters immediately, but as we had not heard there were two orders of Baptists, we were deceived. We then went looking in search of our kind of Baptists and found a church of our faith and order fifteen miles distant, and gave in our letters.
My mind being much exercised about preaching before, I commenced in 1812 and tried from place to place, succeeding poorly, as I thought. Three years after I started back to Virginia on a business trip. There I met an old brother and he would have me try to preach. On my way I met with an association and preached with the greatest liberty I had ever had. A brother requested me to preach at his house next day on my journey. When I arrived there I could not preach. I then thought I would never try again, but when I got to my journey's end they compelled me to try again. I took for my text in the third chapter of John, "As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the son of man be lifted up," etc.
I returned home and still continued trying to show sinners their condition by the word of God, sometimes with pleasure and sometimes in darkness. I saw what a poor ignorant creature I was. I thought I could show sinners what a state there were I, but the Lord alone can show them their condition. I was anxious the people should know what I knew.
Not long after this time a brother wrote me and said that the Lord had made use of me in bringing in one soul to a knowledge of the truth as it is in Jesus. That gave me much encouragement and I started off to preach again and fell in with a brother who I knew before I had made a profession of religion and spent several days with him trying to preach. I made a trip to see my mother back in Virginia and other relatives. I met my former pastor and at one of his appointment I tried to preach and had much pleasure. An old Deacon asked me to preach at his house. I failed, which greatly discouraged me.
Went some distance and fell in with a very able preacher. Felt very small before him, but traveled with him several days, hearing him preach and trying to preach myself. Traveled over 500 miles and had a pleasant time. On my return journey I preached wherever there was opportunity. Found all well at home after being gone over five months and soon started to see a brother-in-law, a Baptist, and found there had never been a Baptist sermon preached in the place. I commenced to preach there monthly and crowds flocked to hear. In the course of three years I baptized a number and organized a church. During this time I preached at several other points.
When I settled near Johnstown I bought fifty acres of land in the woods with a view of settling on it. Having a large family, I rented an improved farm until I could fell the timber. I put my son on it to raise a crop. The following April moved on the farm.
Brought some stock along and in June a windstorm blew a tree on one of my cows and killed her. The next day the wind blew two trees on the roof of my home and smashed the roof in. In the fall a horse died and within two years six horses. All I had had died. These were some of my trials, but I was shortly cheered for we had a revival of religion and I baptized several. A glorious work commenced and before it closed, twenty-three were brought in the fold, five of my own children. On one day I baptized seventeen. Then came two charges against me; one by a Baptist and one by a profligate which caused much trouble. A council of five ministers was called to settle the difficulty. The council from the best evidence they could get came to the following conclusion - Give me a gentle rebuke for some of my hard talk and requested the church to give me a letter of dismission.
I took my letter and gave it in to the church which I had been instrumental in organizing and went to preaching here and to other churches. Then I started back where I was raised to see my sister who had lost her husband and had been confined to her bed some years. On my way I fell in with a brother minister and tried to preach for him and went on to an association and there had the best time I ever had in trying to preach. A brother said he would go on home and make an appointment at his meeting house for me. When I got there I could not preach. Leaving there on my way I came across a minister that I had heard before I made a profession. Stayed with him some time, hearing him preach and trying myself to preach.
Went on my journey to my sister's. Had a pleasant interview and talked to her about baptism. Went to bed and in the morning found her smiling and she asked me what I thought about baptizing her. I replied, "My dear sister, that can't be done, for there is no water within three miles." She said, "Yes, I think there is in yonder meadow where the spring cuts its way through the bank." Finding sufficient water there, a meeting was appointed and a large concourse of people assembled to hear and see the woman killed, as they thought. I took my sister from her arm chair, in which the brethren had brought her, into the water, baptized her and placed her back in her chair. When she got home she was so animated she took some steps.
I left her and went in search of an able preacher I had heard of, trying to preach on the way. I overtook him as he had started on a preaching tour. His venerable appearance and the account I had of him scared me, but he said "You must preach," and in trying I was given considerable liberty and lost my fear. Continued with him several days, hearing and preaching, which was very pleasant.
I was now to the extent of my calculation and started home, preaching on the way until I arrived at my home. By this time my mind was very dark and I thought I would never preach again. I began to amend and my distress began to wear off. Got up and going about when in came a preacher I had thought of sending for. I found he was going to see a sister three miles distant. I decided to go along, but never said a word about my condition.
I then returned home feeling no better and in clearing off a piece of ground about this time which was very stumpy and rooty I dreaded the plowing. My team being fiery and I more so, I burst out cursing the team. I fell down crying "Lord, what shall I do?" After feeling some better I arose and went to plowing. My voice was not heard for the space of six months.
I then went thirty miles to a visitation meeting to see the brethren and hear preaching, hoping for ease to my troubled mind. I was there compelled to try and preach much against my will. After talking some, light appeared and darkness vanished and I had a pleasant time. I then came to the conclusion that I would continue preaching let there be light or darkness.
I then went on traveling from state to state until I traveled and preached in seven different states. My mind was led back to first search for causes. I was directed to Proverbs 8:22. There I found a glorious plan indeed. Christ was set up before the world began. I would refer you to Isaiah 63, Matthew 1st chapter, John 6th chapter, 10th chapter, 17th chapter, Ephesians 1st chapter and 5th chapter. Those passages will satisfy any enquiring mind.
I continued preaching and on a trip to see my sister in bed, as before spoken of, whom I baptized, and she was still lying in bed. She appointed me her executor and the condition of her business was in, caused me to go back several times and gave me an opportunity to preach on the way. I thus continued to preach until I closed my ministry which was over fifty-eight years.
My companion lived with me sixty-nine years and on the first day of January, 1871, she fell asleep in Jesus' arms, being eight-six years, eight months, and twenty-four days old. I am now left alone, how long, the Lord only knows. After giving a sketch of my life and ministry, I feel like saying as David, "Now Lord, what wait I for" and like Simeon, "Now Lord, let now thy servant depart in peace for mine eyes hath seen thee."
I must tell of my manner of preaching. I began as the Lord began, by trying to show sinners the condition they were in. They flew to the law for life and found their works could avail nothing, which caused them to cry, mercy, mercy. Then their load of guilt was lifted, which caused them to rejoice in the Lord. Some were led to baptism which is immersion; others were want of a better understanding, were led to be sprinkled for baptism.
I continued on this manner for some years. Then my mind was led to first causes. There I found a glorious plan agreed upon between the Father and the Son. The father gave of Adam's family to the Son all that should compose the bride - the Lamb's wife. The Father laid all the sins of this people on the Son. The Son undertook to present the Bride spotless at the Great Day. In order so to do took upon himself a body of flesh and blood, like Adam in its original state. This Son being hold fulfilled all the claims of the holy against those people for they being sinful could not fulfill the claims of the holy law and must ultimately sin without this remedy. The Son, having eternal life to give to as many as the Father gave him, the sinners being dead in trespass and in sin, the Son going on to implant this principal of Divine life in the hearts of everyone given to Him when alive, making use of his hold word and the ministry to bring them to a knowledge and understanding of the remission of their sins. When this work is completed, I believe the great day will come, the Son will present the Bride spotless, saying "Father, behold I and the children thou hast given me."
Caty Peters was born on the 6th of April 1794 in Hampshire county, Virginia, the daughter of Tunis Peters who raised nine sons and four girls. She resided in that place until 1802 when she was married to Eli Ashbrook of the same town and place. We there lived together eight years and then moved to Ohio and settled down in Fairfield county where we lived for twelve years, then moved to Johnstown, Licking county Ohio. She there died January 1, 1871, at the age of eight-six years, eight months, and twenty-four day. We lived together sixty-nine years minus five days, and during that time there were born unto us seven sons and seven daughters.
One son and one daughter died in infancy, an even dozen growing up to be men and women, all married. Two of the daughters died before their mother. There are at this time living, six sons and four daughters. Names of living children are: Johnathan P. Ashbrook, oldest son, married Sarah Rees of Licking county, and they raised eight children. Francina Ashbrook married Thaddeus Williams of Johnstown, and had two sons and two daughters. Tunis P. Ashbrook married Ann Kaufman of Fairfield county, and they had four sons and three daughters. Absalom P. Ashbrook was married to Myranda DeBolt, a daughter of Rev. George DeBolt of Fairfield county, and they raised three children. Mary C. Ashbrook married Mahlon M. Hoover of Johnstown, and they raised four sons and three daughters. Permelia Ashbrook married Reasen Green of Johnstown, and they raised one son and two daughters. Julia Ashbrook married William Gates of Delaware county, O. Hiram Ashbrook married Sarah Ann Jewett of Johnstown, and they raised six children. Eli Ashbrook Jr. married Lovina Green of Johnstown, and raised eight children. William Ashbrook married Lucy Pratt of Johnstown, and raised six children.
Caty Ashbrook, above alluded to, made a profession of religion at the age of twenty-eight years and united with the Baptist church and lived the life of a consistent Christian and Mother in Israel, leaving a numerous circle of relatives and friends to mourn. She lived to see ten of her children make a profession of religion, in uniting with the Baptist church and one with the Methodist church.
I tried to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ for fifty-eight years. I am now in my ninetieth year, healthy but feeble. During my life I have had the satisfaction of seeing nine of my children unite with the Baptist church, one with the Methodist, and one died without making any profession. The remaining two are, I trust, subject to Divine grace. One son has been preaching for many years. Hoping this may be of some use to my fellow creatures after I am dead and gone. --Eli Ashbrook Closing comment by Will: I feel that I must make brief reference to the above interesting story of the life of my grandfather, which is to me both precious and priceless. How I regret that he did not appreciate how valuable a greater elaboration of the family history would have been to his descendants.
While this was written when he was in his 90th year, yet his keen intellect had not been dimmed by his four score and ten years, and I know he knew and accepted his reference to his father's family and his grandfather's family as true even though it is slightly in conflict with the family tree as recorded in Vol. 1, page 14, of my "Line a Day."
Grandfather state that my great, great grandfather had five sons, John, Thomas, Moses, Aaron, and Levi, but "no James" as I had been informed. No mention is made of any daughters by my grandfather. It is quite likely there were but a century ago women were not considered as important as they are today. Just why, I have often wondered, for is there anyone more important or worthier of mention than our mother and was she not a woman?
My report of my great grandfather's family as printed on page 14, is in the main true and harmonizes with the above mention of my grandfather. Elder Levi Ashbrook, my great grandfather, was twice married, the father of eighteen children, four by the first wife and fourteen by the second. His first wife was a Pentacost and his second with a Chenowith. The children of the first marriage consisted of one son and three daughters and not three sons and one daughter. The children of the second wife were six sons and eight daughters and not seven sons and seven daughters, according to my grandfather, and I am sure he knew. The sons of the second marriage were John, Absalom, Aaron, William, Thomas, and Eli but no Felix as mentioned on page 14. Also it should be Absalom and not Abraham. My grandfather does not mention the names of the eight daughters, but there was a Mary, who married Philip Peters, I am sure. The names of the other seven daughters are lost to history so far as I have been able to ascertain.
I much regret that grandfather was not more specific in giving more data of the churches he served and of his religious activity. That he was deeply religious, penitent and sincere there is no doubt, for was not the good old saint so conscious stricken because amid almost justifiable conditions he "cursed his animals" that he did not open his mouth (to preach) for six months. I wonder if it was then the expression originated "that would make a preacher swear." That he immediately became so penitent that he fell upon his knees and cried for forgiveness makes sure I am certain that he was forgiven instanter by the Good Lord he so long and meekly served.
I am proud to be his grandson and after reading many times this time-stained manuscript, inspires in me a desire to me more like him. - W. A. A.
NOTE: Dates for living individuals have been excluded. A number in brackets after the name indicates either the person belongs to more than one Chenoweth line of ancestry. (i.e. a marriage of cousins occurred or a person married more than one family member) or has multiple marriages.
