THE SAGOS: SARAH FRANCIS ALSBURY(6) 1828-1913

The oldest of twelve children born to "Elder" Brice William Alsbury and Rachel Tucker, Sarah Frances Alsbury was born in Sangamon County, Illinois on Feb 20,1828. She was married to Samuel Sago on Dec 24,1847 in Pike County, IL. Samuel Sago was born Jul 05, 1819 in Pennsylvania, to Alexander and Margaret Sago. Family tradition is that Alexander was born in France, although a record of his immigration has not been found. Margaret's last name is not known, but she is believed to have been born in Holland. Immigration records have not been located, nor has a record of their marriage.

Sam and Frances Sago spent the earliest years of their marriage in Pike County, where he worked as a cooper and wagon maker. In 1866 the family moved, no doubt in a wagon made by Samuel, to Randolph County, Arkansas. Of the eleven children born to them in Illinois, five were buried there: the first-born son in 1849, an 18-month old son in 1854, a 20-month old son in 1860, a 14-month old daughter in 1863, and an 8-year-old daughter in 1864. While traveling to Arkansas, the two youngest sons, ages 3 and 1, died within a few weeks of each other. Sam and Frances arrived at their new home with four boys; another son, their 12th and final child, was born in Arkansas.

The Sagos settled briefly in two different locations before purchasing land in the Stokes community in 1870, where Samuel built a home. Between 1870 and 1872, Samuel and his son, Alexander, were hired to do the woodwork involved in the construction of the Randolph County Courthouse. This courthouse still stands and the hand-shaped and fitted wood components are a testament to their skill. Their pictures hang in the courthouse today. After Samuel's death on June 15, 1879, Frances continued to live in the home, caring for her blind parents. Two of her sons lived with her and the others were within a few miles. She often rode her small white mule to "visit" her family, preferring not to hitch up a buggy, as was common in that time, especially among women of her age.
