ROBERT(5) 1782-1862

Robert was born in Hampshire County the oldest son of "Revolutionary John". He was raised in Randolph County, where he would also marry and father his children; then he relocated to Braxton County. He was married twice. First to Rachel Stalnaker, daughter of John I. Stalnaker and Margaret Elizabeth White, forging the first of many unions between the Stalnakers and Chenoweths. His sister, Mary, would marry Rachel's brother, John White Stalnaker, a year later. John and Rachel had three daughters before she died at age 30. Robert then married his second wife, Edith Skidmore, daughter of John Skidmore and Mary Magdalene Hinkle and cousin to the wives of his brothers, John and Jehu. In their 46 years of marriage they had 12 children, in addition to raising Robert's first three. Although Robert was the fourth in a line of first-born sons, the first nine of Robert's children were all daughters.

Robert was the sheriff of Randolph County for six years. During this period he posted bond for White Stalnaker and as a result, lost all his property. He and Edith put what they could of their household goods on the back of a cow and struck out for Braxton Co., where some of Edith's family had located. This was probably about 1836 and certainly before December 1836. Thus Robert became the first of John(4)'s family to leave Randolph County. This move would further spread this Chenoweth line throughout central West Virginia. Edith died at age 69 in Calhoun County. Three years later, Robert is found in 1860 living in the home of his son, Robert James, in the newly created Calhoun County (organized from Gilmer Co in 1856). He died two years after that at the age of 80 in Calhoun Co., WV. Robert and Edith are buried in the Chenoweth/Smith cemetery near Nicut, Calhoun Co., WV. At present Robert's family is the largest of any 5th generation Chenoweth. Much of this family is still in West Virginia. Some of the earlier children stayed in Randolph Co., but most relocated with their parents into Central West Virginia. One daughter went to Missouri, another to Illinois.
