THE SCOTTS: SARAH(3) 1747-1814

Probably born in Frederick Co., VA, the second child of Thomas Chenoweth, Sarah married John Scott near Old Town in present day Allegany Co., MD about 1768. Very little is known of their life and only two sons are presently known. Thomas, the oldest is known to have been born in Old Town in 1772. He became a lawyer and was admitted to the bar at Lexington, KY in 1800. The family of Thomas Scott moved to Chillicothe, Ross Co., OH and in 1809 Thomas Scott was appointed to the State Supreme Court. Much work remains to be done to bring this branch into proper focus. John died in 1804 and Sarah ten years later. It is believed that they remained in Mason Co., KY when Sarah's siblings moved onto Ohio.

Children of SARAH CHENOWETH and JOHN SCOTT are:

1. Thomas b. September 30, 1772, Old Town, Allegheny Co., MD; d. February 13, 1856, Chillocothe, Ross Co., OH; m. CATHERINE DORSEY WOOD, May 12, 1796; b. 1778; d. 1858.
2. John b. Abt. 1786; m. JEMIMA LEVI, December 06, 1815, Mason Co., KY; b. Bet. 1781 - 1897.

RECNT ADDITION: A wonderful description of his family is found in a 30 plus page letter written by Thomas Scott, City of Chillocothe, Ross Co., OH, October 31st, 1851in an autobiographical sketch. Thomas tells us that his mother Sarah died in April of 1814 in Mason Co., KY. John Lewis first introduced me to this paper by some partial pages in his possession concerning his ancestor, Mary Scott. The wider implications of this study were described to me by Dorothy Scott. The paper is obtainable from the Ohio Historical Society. From this paper the fuller nature of the Scott familis is now known: Those that survived to maturity are: Mary m: James Lewis, Thomas (above), James disappearred in Tennesee, Sarah m: Benjamin Bowman, Edward died unmarried, Elizabeth m: Walter Smallwood, John (above), Hannah m: a Levi. In addition, two other children: Alice, and Susannah died in infancy.

Then there is this wonderful desciption of Sarah Chenoweth: " My mother possessed in an eminent degree those qualities essential to the diffusing of happiness in the domestic circle. Her person, household and house were always kept clean and neat. She was an excellent cook and had her food dressed and prepared in the very best style. She loved her family and friends, but never uttered an unkind expression to, or against her enemies, if any she had. Her children all loved her and delighted to obey her. From the period in which she embraced religion and joined the Methodist Church until her death her life was like an even spun thread without kinks or flaws. All her domestic, private, civil and religious duties were performed with conscientious precision and punctuality. For many years prior to her death she was a daughter of affliction but never complained. Calm and unruffled amidst all the afflictions and difficulties she had to encounter, she pursued the even tenor of her ways. Hers were the mild diffusible Christian virtues the influence of which was more easily perceived than we can find words to describe. The year prior to her dissolution she visted several of her children and friends, the last of whom were your parents and family. She spent two or three months with us prior to her death which occurred in April AD 1814, she died of the disease denominated the Cold plague. During her last sickness she was as serene as a summer's evening, no clouds intervened to darken the prospect before her, until she closed her eves in death."
