JOHN(4) 1785-1857

John was the second son of John Chenoweth and Rachel Kerr, born February 17, 1785 place unknown. It is not known where his parents married. The Harris and Hiatt accounts of this family place them in Ohio too early. The Thomas group was on the move from Frederick Co., VA, had settled near Old Town in present day Allegany Co., MD for a number of years and reached Mason Co., KY by 1790, but detail is lacking. John spent his teens in Ross Co., OH and married there to Rachel Kerr on December 14, 1809. This is peculiar as it is the same name as given for his mother. One wonders if there is some mix-up in the accounts, or if John's bride was related to his mother. Both John and Rachel are given to have been born in 1785, so they were about 24 at the time of this marriage. John and Rachel had 10 known children. The first 7 were born in Ross Co., OH and the last 3 in Vermillion Co., IN where John located about 1822, becoming one of the original property owners of that county. His parents and siblings had moved earlier to neighboring Vigo Co. John and Rachel lived and farmed in Vermillion County the rest of their lives. Rachel died in 1848, about the age of 63 and John 9 year later at the age of 71. They are both buried in the Chenoweth cemetery, Perrysville, IN.
