This page is intended to highlight Chenoweth lines either not found or not detailed in the Harris book between the 3rd and 5th generation. Most of these lead to significant descendant lines not included in the book. Daughter lines born before the 1830s generally cannot be found through Census work, but rather rely on wills, bibles and other family genealogy information passed down. In general the daughters in the line John are well developed and do not appear in this listing until the 5th generation.
It has long been known that Hannah married an Ashton as her married name is given in the will of her father Richard. But the husband's name remained unknown until Shirley Muszynski contacted me. Hannah married Joseph Ashton and the family moved to Harford Co., MD. A daughter was named Kezia and a grandson Chenoweth Ashton. Posted knowledge if of one 4th generation son son, Thomas, who migrated to Fairfield Co., OH. More recent knowledge has been gained for the larger family living in Harford Co., MD and it's mant ties to the Streett family.
Though Mary is listed in both the Hiatt and Harris books, based on the will of her father William, it was not known what had become of her. In the first year of the website, we were contacted by several Sutton researchers citing Mary as mentioned in the Bible of her son David Sutton giving her maiden name as Chenoweth and a date of birth of March 22, 1743. A date this early could only be a child in the 3rd generation. Further research showed that Abraham Sutton was an apparent neighbor of Thomas Chenoweth on Back Creek in Frederick County before leaving for the Fort Cumberland area of Allegany Co., MD. This implies a Virginia daughter and though all three 2nd generation Virginia Chenoweth sons had daughters named Mary, other marriages were given for the daughters of John and Thomas. This left Mary of William as the likely choice. Just after the Elkins Reunion in 2002, Greg Wulker examined the estate records of William(2). He found that the name Mary Sutton was included in the estate records, confirming this logical placement. The Sutton line is large with much still to be learned. The families continued their migration to Washington Co., PA, then to the Warren Co., OH area where other William descendants settled and then on into Indiana.
Like Mary, Anne is listed in both the Hiatt and Harris books, based on the will of her father William, it was not known what had become of her. Anne is mention specifically in a codicil of William's will, the tenor of which indicating that Anne was a young unmarried daughter. In 1989, Greg Wulker received a letter from a descendant of Anne's giving her dates from a family bible: 22 Aug., 1775-18 Nov. 1808. This presents a problem in that Anne the mother would be approximately 53 years old upon then the birth of Anne. This is not likely. Either Anne's date of birth is wrong, the age of Anne (no known source) is wrong, or this Anne belongs to one of William's sons, most likely William, Jr.
Elizabeth is not listed as a child of John's. There is no definitive list of John's children. They were not mentioned in the Hiatt book. A son Richard is mentioned in his grandfather's will. Parmenus, Archibald, and Nicholas show up in Censuses in Washington Co., TN where the widow Francis Haile Chenoweth moved. The daughter, Sarah Frances 'Fannie', who never married survives to the 1850 Census. Harris gives additional children of John and Ruth Ann who are never found. They did not list Elizabeth. But Elizabeth as a Chenoweth is included in the Haile work of Denzil Mauldin. Widowed shortly before 1850, Elizabeth appears in the 1850 Census of Washington Co., TN living with her son Henry Hale. Included in the households is her grandson and Henry's son Chenoweth Hale. Also living in the home is a Francis Chenoweth, believed to possibly be her apparent sister Fannie Chenoweth, but the age is off. Both Elizabeth and Frances are both born in Maryland.
Harriet is not given as a daughter of Thomas in either Chenoweth book. She has been added from family records furnished by Harry Russell Schuppner, Jr. There is no definitive list of the children of Thomas who moved to Harford Co., MD. Harriet married James Wilson on November 06, 1822 probably in Harford Co. What happened to Harriet, her husband, or if they had a family is not presently known.
Sophia, listed in both Hiatt and Harris, married Lewis Eastinghouse on April 16, 1807 in Brooke Co., VA (now WV). This information comes from Jo Lynne Harline. Sophia's siblings Arthur, III and Sarah Chenoweth Baxter had migrated to Brooke Co. before the 1810 Census after the death of Arthur, Jr. Apparently Sophia accompanied them. Part of the mystery with his line is the spelling of this surname. More probably it is Eastinghoff, Eastinghon, Eastenhouse or Eastinghauson
Though Harris has that Susanna is a daughter of Thomas and Rachel Norris, Dot Tucker Houk unearthed this record in March 2000: "Susanna Chenoweth b. July 9, 1791 daughter of William and Elizabeth (St. James parish register)". This is of course William Chenoweth and Elisabeth Richardson. The question is was this William the son of Arthur or Richard. At present we have two marriages for the son of Arthur and believe he died before his father, no progeny is known. No present marriage is known for Richard's son William. Susanna married John Bond Carroll on April 04, 1812. Nothing more at present is known.
The children of Thomas are not in the Chenoweth books as Cora Hiatt skipped a generation when listing the family of Thomas believing him to have lived some 100 years. Mary is found as a child among the papers of the Chancery Court, which dealt with a dispute over property that Thomas had sold. Dorinda Shipley believes that Mary married an unknown Doll. Elizabeth Chenoweth, the widow of Thomas, lived with Mary Doll and died in her home in Frederick Co., MD according to testimony in a equity document. From Dorinda: "MARY DOLL had held notes from Elizabeth Chenoweth for the mortgage on her property in Woodsboro, Frederick Co, MD (purchased Woods Town Land, Lot# 4 from Michael Beck on 19 Dec 1814 in Land Rec TB-1, 201) which she received from her 27 Aug 1834. Some time afterwards Elizabeth Chenoweth died without a will. (Evidently she was already a widow in 1814 as land record stated nothing regarding her husband.). Mary Doll had one daughter, Ann Elizabeth, who married Dennis Etzler. A son was named Thomas Chenoweth Etzler.
The children of Thomas are not in the Chenoweth books as Cora Hiatt skipped a generation when listing the family of Thomas believing him to have lived some 100 years. Ruth and her marriage to Thomas Wall are found among the papers of the Chancery Court, which dealt with a dispute over property that Thomas had sold. This marriage took place on March 29, 1794. No continuation of this line is presently known.
The children of Thomas are not in the Chenoweth books as Cora Hiatt skipped a generation when listing the family of Thomas believing him to have lived some 100 years. Rebecca and her marriage to Alexander Coulter are found among the papers of the Chancery Court, which dealt with a dispute over property that Thomas had sold. No continuation of this line is presently known.
The children of Thomas are not in the Chenoweth books as Cora Hiatt skipped a generation when listing the family of Thomas believing him to have lived some 100 years. Elizabeth and her marriage to Eli Ridgely Griffith are found among the papers of the Chancery Court, which dealt with a dispute over property that Thomas had sold. They had 3 known children, but a continuation of this line is not presently known. According to Dorinda Shipley: Eli Ridgely Griffith tried to swindle his wife's sister Mary out of her property when she as gravely ill. She recovered to find she owned nothing, and had to fight to get her property back. It is stated that he moved to Kentucky without his wife.
The children of Thomas are not in the Chenoweth books as Cora Hiatt skipped a generation when listing the family of Thomas believing him to have lived some 100 years. Chloe Matilda and her marriage to Jacob Houck are found among the papers of the Chancery Court, which dealt with a dispute over property that Thomas had sold. This marriage took place on June 17, 1812. No continuation of this line is presently known.
A daughter of Richard Chenoweth by his first marriage, Jemina married William Stone by research of Peter Chenoweth and confirmed by a family study of Barlett McBath submitted by Bill Close. No continuation of this line is presently known.
A daughter of Richard Chenoweth by his first marriage, Mary married Lloyd Marsh by research of Peter Chenoweth and confirmed by a family study of Barlett McBath submitted by Bill Close. There is at least one known son of this marriage, Richard Chenoweth Marsh. No continuation of this line is presently known.
Though The Harris book has the first marriage of Anna Mariah, it mistakes her 2nd marriage as to a N.J. Murray. In actuality she remarried the death of her first husband to five years later to James H. Thompson. This line extends to present day from both spouses. This knowledge first came from Barbara J. Hemmerling, a descendant. [The Harris error is actually the marriage of Alexander M. Chenoweth to Nancy Jane Murray].
The Hiatt and Harris books have no detail on Absolom the son of William. We now know that he married Ann Hayes thanks to Greg Wulker and that he had 3 known daughters. The marriage of Eleanor to Joshua Baldwin is found in early Berkeley County marriages (a list of these can be found in The History of Calverts who were Quakers by J. Richard Buckey.) Joanne Swartz has been a good resource in developing this line, which extends to present day.
The Hiatt and Harris books have no detail on Absolom the son of William. We now know that he married Ann Hayes thanks to Greg Wulker and that he had 3 known daughters. Rosella Vohs has been a good resource in developing this line, but it has not yet been extended to present day. The family is last seen in Champaign Co., OH
Permelia is known as Mildred in both Chenoweth books. This is an erroneous derivation of the diminutive 'Milly'. Knowledge of Permelia's two marriages comes from her descendant, Sandy Obie, and research by Glenda Lloyd. This line now extends to present day.
The marriage and spouse of Ruth is known from research of Joyce Corns Wiegand from her research into the estate records of Richard Chenoweth in Tippecanoe Co., IN. Much remains to be known of this line and it has not yet been extended to present day. Harris mistakenly has this marriage to a James McCalb. There is a Ross Co. record of a Ruth marrying a James McCalb in May or June of 1812. It is not known at present whether this a first marriage or a marriage of another Ruth. That a marriage record has not been found for Samuel Findley, speaks to the possibly of the former.
Harris has these two marriages, but Rebecca's 2nd spouse was only known by his last name, Shoemaker. The children of these two marriages has been developed by Joyce Wiegand, but much remains to be known of this line and it has not yet been extended to present day.
The marriage and spouse of Martha is known from research of Joyce Wiegand from her research into the estate records of Richard Chenoweth in Tippecanoe Co., IN. Nothing presently is known of what happened to this family. Harris mistakely has the marriage to William Derby. There is a marriage on 24 Oct 1829 of a Polly Chenoweth to a William Derby in Pike Co., OH. It is not presently known who this was.
Nothing in either Chenoweth book is known of William, the son of Thomas. Anne is believed to be a daughter by her marriage to Charles Fitzpatrick in Mason Co., KY.
Mercy is found on the the lists of Mason Co. marriages to Thornton Ellis. By assumption she is considered one of the daughters of William Chenoweth son of Thomas(2), who lived in this area after his siblings had moved up into Ohio. Presently this Ellis line is only continued through 3 generations and more work needs to be done.
The marriage of Rachel to Joel Skinner was found in WFT Vol #0183 as part of the Luse family history. Cora listed Rachel but gave the wrong marriage found for Margaret, Harris listed her as Rachel Margaret, but Rachel appears to be a separate daughter m: Joel Skinner. The descendant line in this family comes from Helen Elizabeth Gilmore.
Greg Wulker was instrumental in placing this Kentucky marriage. The children are found in the 1850 Census confirming the placement. To date this line has been developed by Census work and no contact with descendants has been made.
This marriage has been confusing. As Mary and William were cousins, the marriage is found n Jefferson Co., KY and brought to our attention by Virginia Duling. For along time based on the contention of Margaret W. Baird in her Thurman family study, this Mary was thought to be the daughter of Absolom, Jr. Though Virginia Dulings careful research it is now known that Mary was the daughter of Absolom Chenoweth and Eleanor Duvall. Mary married twice. It is not known whether or not she had any children.
The marriage was found on the unplaced marriage list from the research of Richard and Shirley Harris. At the time, the family of her parents, Absolom Chenoweth and Eleanor Duvall had not been developed. Absolom settled in Lawrence Co., IL. No continuation for this marriage is presently known.

Cora Hiatt cites that Elizabeth the daughter of William and Elizabeth Hutchinson married a Dunbar; but that Elizabeth is too old for this marriage. Eliza Jame is found in the 1850 Census living with her presumed aunt, Eleanor Chenoweth Harryman in Clinton Co., IN. She is believed to be a daughter of Arthur and Jackealina Wall, believed to be his 2nd wife. This marriage to Silas Dunbar comes from Tippecanoe Co. marriage records. Eliza and Silas are found in Montgomery Co., IN in the 1860 through 1880 Censuses. The widow of the brother of Silas married William Newton Chenoweth, thought to be the brother of Eliza. Information on the Dunbar family comes from Linda Backus Towers.
