WILLIAM(2) 1718-1785
William was the fourth son and sixth child, born about 1718, probably in Pennsylvania or New Jersey before the family came to Maryland. He, like his brothers, John and Thomas, moved to Virginia. William was the first of the three brothers to have a land record in Virginia. He had become an established resident of Opechan, when he obtained an indenture for 100 acres of land, being part of a grant of 1315 acres previously patented to John Mills in 1735 and located om Mill Creek in present day Berkeley Co. This indenture was dated February 9, 1743 and finalized on March 9, 1743. According to Harris, this land was finally recorded as 171 acres in 1752.
Unlike other Chenoweth lines, William's lines have been obscured for many generations. He had 4 sons and 3 daughters, known by his will of 1785. The dates in Hiatt for the daughters are clearly wrong, Mary was the oldest of all the children. William simply listed the sons first and daughters second. Until recently only lines were known for his sons, Joseph (Hiatt) and Isaac (added in Harris). William, Jr. is also in Hiatt and Harris but misplaced, originally by Cora Hiatt as the 4th generation son of John(3) John(2). [see background discussion] This is a large strong line and part of the 3 cousin marriages of the two Williams who went to Warren Co., OH. The lines of Absolom, another son of William, have never been known, but recently his marriage has now been found and at least some of his children defined. Joseph, his son, preceded William's death by a few months, and dying young, had only one son.
Most of William(2) lines went to Ohio: William and Joseph's son Joseph. Jr. to Warren Co. and Absolom to Clark Co. However, Isaac's descendants, traditionally the best known of William's line, went, for the most part, to Fayette Co., PA and later to Ohio. William traditionally married an Ann, now thought to be Ann Polk. A Jonathan Polk is living next door to William in Virginia. The marriage was in Virginia when William was about 24. William and Ann lived their married lives in Virginia, William dying at about the age of 67. [Harris text]
