WILLIAM, Jr.(3). Abt. 175?-1820

William, Jr. is one of the two Williams who settled in Warren after 1810 and whose children married each other. We now believe that the historical placements of these two Williams were reversed. Ever since the publication of Cora Hiatt's book in 1925, the William who married Elizabeth Hutchinson was considered the son of John(3) of Hampshire Co. It is far more likely that this William who lived in Berkeley Co was instead, William, Jr. living of a half of the land his father left his sons, Absolom and William, on Mill Creek. The birth years of William and his wife are known. The age Cora Hiatt gave mistakenly as a son of John(3) is too young. Their earliest children were born in the mid to late 1770s. William married in Virginia (probably Berkeley County) to Elizabeth Hutchinson; her parents are unknown, and the source of this surname, as found in Hiatt's account is unknown. All of their ten children were likely born in Berkeley County, VA, before the family moved west to Warren Co., OH. This would be their home for the rest of their lives.

Three of William, Jr.'s sons married three Chenoweth daughters of William S. Chenoweth, forming one of the earliest and most notable sets of cousin marriages in the family. The location and timing of these three marriages between Virginia and Ohio appear to start while the two families were still in and finish after both families had located to Warren County.

William died in 1820 in Warren Co., OH; his will was proven on November 21,1820. In it he mentions his wife and each of his nine surviving children. When Elizabeth died is unknown. It is believed that both William and Elizabeth are buried in the Middle Run Baptist cemetery, which they were members of. This church is located just across the county line in Greene Co. The tombstones are marked "W.C." and "E.C.". Many of the descendants of this family still live in Ohio.
