WILLIAM S.(4) ca 1750s-1838

The lines of William S. are well known and large, but his placement within the Chenoweth family had been problematic for years. Cora Hiatt, perhaps, started the confusion when she mistakenly placed the wife and children of this William under William Pugh of Randolph County, WV. The lines of the Randolph County Chenoweths are so well known, it is strange that this mistake was made. William Pugh's family is certainly not that as depicted by Hiatt, and has been properly documented by Harris. The misplaced children did belong to a William, but where did this William belong? Shirley Harris thought that this William, who they called William I, was the William of Thomas(2), whose birth is known to be May 3, 1760 and who fought in the Revolution with four of his brothers. But the known information of the lost William(3) of Thomas places him in very different locations at precise times from William S. who was in Virginia until after 1810. He is one of the two Williams who settled in Warren after 1810 and whose children married each other. We now believe that the historical placements of these two Williams were reversed. Now 'placed' as the oldest son of John Chenoweth(3) and Mary, William was probably was born in Hampshire Co., VA (now WV) in the 1750s. He appears to be the only son of this marriage and somewhat older and independent of his half brothers from his father John's 2nd marriage. William S. is said to have fought in the American Revolution, though the description given is confusing. He married first to Catherine Rinker, the daughter of Hans Casper Rinker and Mary Anna Shultz. Most likely they married in Frederick Co., Virginia where they would start a family and live on Back Creek on lands William received from his father-in-law, Casper Rinker. Catherine died about 1809 and William soon married again to Ann McCool before November 1811. Two land indentures between William and John McCool, the father of Ann, help frame the timing and place of these events. After the marriage in 1811, William and Ann moved their family to Warren County, OH. The timing is not quite certain. William's father wrote his will in April 1811, allowing a special provision of $50 to William as a bequest from his grandfather unnamed.

By Ann, William is known to have had 5 additional children, having had ten by his first wife Catherine. Once in Warren Co., OH, William's family located near that of William, Jr. from Berkeley Co who had located there about the same time. This would allow the 3rd and last marriage to occur between the daughters and sons of these two Williams that had begun in Virginia. William lived in Ohio for 27 years, dying in 1838, in Allen County. A monument was placed at his grave near Lima, Ohio in 1913, in recognition of his Revolutionary War service. Ann lived on for another fourteen years.
